What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?

A couple close friends of mine were members of their local boxes and would always talk about how much they loved it. My coworker & close friend has been a member of Rise since the beginning and she had been encouraging me to give it a try at HER box after a not so successful attempt at another box. I figured, why not? I want to make changes and I want to do them the right way, here's my opportunity. She gifted me her Golden Ticket and I started the fitness classes on November 1st, 2015 with Coach Justin.

What was your first impression? How has that changed?

Holy crap! I was so intimidated. I made Alli come with me to my first fitness class because I was scared out of my mind. I would position myself in the back of the fitness classes & behind the wall to the main area so no one would watch me. I know, WHAT A WEIRDO! Two weeks in, I had a major life change that put me out of my comfort zone like I had never been before. When all I wanted to do was sit around and sulk, some pushing from a few good friends and the coaches at Rise helped me get there and I instantaneously felt better every day I was there. I found strength, encouragement, laughs & smiles, and hope. It had been one of only a few things that was consistent for me during that time. I eventually found myself moving to the front of class & enjoyed helping other new Fitness participants not feel so intimidated as they started joining. I have already learned so much about myself both physically and mentally this past year, and am ready to continue to push myself to the next level. The coaches, people, and friendly atmosphere are what keeps me coming back. Now, I sometimes catch myself saying hello to people first, starting conversations with other members & the coaches, and I'm not afraid to ask questions or get clarification on a workout or a modification. Everyone is so positive, encouraging, and welcoming, no matter what time of day you go. I have moved up to the Performance classes and while I'm definitely nowhere near finishing any workouts first, I AM finishing them before time caps, making improvements and gains every day, and learning so much about myself along the way.

What was your first “bright spot” (something you did really well from the start)?

Being able to "put some weight on the bar" & shoulder to overhead movements. I was comfortable getting back to lifting just like the old days of competitive swimming training & those movements really mimic the "streamline" motion I've spent much of my life in.

What was your biggest challenge?

Burpees, gymnastics movements, and just hanging on to the bar!

What are you working on now?

Double unders, toes to bar, pullups, and getting better at endurance workouts.

What’s your favorite Rise memory?”

There are so many! Two that really stand out: One, while I didn't participate in the Open last year, I really enjoyed coming to the Thursday night Throwdown challenges and watching everyone's excitement. I still have my Minion Easter Egg (so happy I did not receive burpees in my egg) from Maddie on my desk at work. Secondly, the Vertical Endeavors outing! I really enjoyed getting to know some of the members in a fun atmosphere where we conquered our fear of heights and had a fun afternoon of climbing.
